Mexico's love affair with the Guinness Book of Records..

Mexico City is currently putting the finishing touches to setting up the world's tallest Christmas tree; a contender for the Guinness Book of Records. Here it is towering over the main street, Reforma, rivalling the city skyscrapers of the Stock exchange and the Financial District, thus holding its own with the tallest buildings in the city....

Mexico is no stranger to the Guinness Book of Records; indeed it is something of a national obsession as we currently hold the record for the highest number of attempts to get into the Guinness Book of Records. From cooking up the largest meatball, to the highest number dancing "Thriller", to the World's Largest Christmas Tree, we go for anything going!! What does that say about a culture and country, I wonder?? Feliz Navidad!!

Ah, human excess... what on earth is a giant xmas tree needed for ??? And at what cost ? Is Mexico as rich as all that ? Would they not do better to spend the resources on ending the drug traffic and drug wars that give the country a bad name and keep tourists away ? Paris has the Eiffel Tower, true, but that was over a hundred years ago... a world of conspicuous excesses...

So, I've been wondering, do fish tacos exist ?

Hi owen - yes it does seem rather excessive...and yes you can get fish taco anywhere down at the beach ehre and they are indeed delicious!!

I'm hoping Pepsi funded the cost of putting up the tree rather than the taxpayer. But who knows. I went along to the opening anyway, and it was all very jolly!

So, Papa Noel now has a big thick mustache and a large sombrero instead of a white beard. The times, huh? They are a-changing. :-)

Greetings from London.

OMG! That is a big one! I'm surprised the US isn't in competition with them by now!! Countries in general do seem to have an odd set of priorities when it comes to spending money!

And, hey, good to know fish tacos are for real! In spite of my year in Mexico I didn't have any -- probably because I didn't think to ask????

Have a great week, Catherine!

I think Mexico is struggling to make a name for itself, to prove it can keep up with the best...or what it thinks is the best.

Interesting post! I didn't know Mexicans want so badly to be in the Guinness Book of Records.

That is quite a tree in the works! Quite controversial, I guess...and, yes...fish tacos do exist and are quite yummy!

It says that its filled with fun-loving, spirited people! Not very practical, but fun just the same.

Fly Girl - I agree - it is part of an exuberance here, a I´m game for anything kind of attitude which is very refreshing - due to be seen shortly on the ice rink in the Zocalo... Mexicans who have nver skated having fun giving it a go...spending most time huddled against the boards but having tons of fun...

It will be a beautiful site when it's finished and the lights turned on? Do they have to take it down when x-mass is over? Feliz Navidad tambien.

How interesting! I hope you post a picture of the finished tree. That would be fun to see too.
