Chilling Out in Zihuatanejo.....

This is one of my favourite beach resorts in Mexico, and it is where I have been spending the first week of the Easter break. Zihua is a fishing village and small port which has developed into a low key laid back resort around the beaches of La Madera, La Ropa, and Las Gatas.....

The white beaches are pristine, the atmosphere is very chilled, and the biggest decisions of the day revolve around pool or beach? sunlounger or hammock? margarita or pina colada? coconut prawns or catch of the day? A myriad of fish restaurants are strung along the beach plus there is a lively little town itself with many more dining and shopping options...

Nearby Ixtapa soaks up the more upmarket high-rise, nightclubbing crowd, so in Zihua at the end of the day, nightlife amounts to sitting on the beach, cocktail in hand, watching one of the greatest shows on earth - namely the glorious sunsets...

One of the nicest places to stay is on Playa Ropa at the oldest hotel in Zihua - the Catalina. Opened in 1952, it used to host movie stars and rock stars such as Liz Taylor and Mick Jagger in its glamorous glory-days. Now the clientele is more modest and you are more likely to meet teachers from International schools, jewellery designers from Taxco, and escapees from the harsh winters of Canada and the US - great atmosphere and a really friendly crowd. Hi Catherine !

What terrible choices you are faced with... !

I think I'll take the king prawn salad please, with a pitcher of margaritas...

:-)

PS my word verifiacation is "hizingsg", which is the noise that came back up my throat just after downing the last margarita

The only thing you forgot to mention is that the place was also the dream destination of one of Hollywoods fictional characters, Andy Dufresne. The Shawshank Redemption remains one of my all time favourites. One day I'll get there myself!

Yowsas! These area gorgeous! Zhuia is on my list of places to go. I think one of my dear friends from ages ago still lives there, but I lost track of her.
Love those coconut tree shadows!

Obviously the only problem with this fascinating place would be which choices to make!

You must see it. Really. Incredible film. It was written by Stephen King as part of a four novella compilation, which I read first. In the absence of the film, I do recommend the read!

I didn't go anywhere much. Worked most of Easter. The other half went to Zacatecas for a few days. Then we went to Tula when she got back.

I just wanted to clarify that the beach is called "Las Gatas", not "Los Gatos". It is named after a harmless type of nurse shark that used to be found there long ago.

Anyone interested in Zihuatanejo info is welcome to visit my website, Zihuatanejo.net.

Hi Again!
It is on Ladywell Road, just before where the police station used to be. I think that has been turned into flats like the Shooters Hill one now. Here is a link to google maps street view-don't know if it will work! I love street view. Do you know the adhesive specialities building-I love that building!
