Shadow Shot Sunday 221 - Nice

Happy Easter everyone!! Here is the view from the balcony of my apartment here in Nice where I have lived for almost three years, but I am on the move again.....After a decade of continuous living overseas first in Mexico City, then in Nice, and at least two decades of globetrotting, living and working in Canada, Australia, and travelling extensively through Asia, North, Central, and South America, Europe and Australasia, I am going HOME - yes moving back to LONDON in JULY 2015. As I am also planning to give up teaching after over three decades at the chalkface and search for a new direction, the big word for 2015 is CHANGE. Here is a shadowy corner of my apartment here in Nice which will only be my corner for the next three months.....

What changes are you planning for 2015?? Plus a question for bloggers - how easy is it to blog from your own hometown?? In the meantime check out other shadow shots from around the world by clicking HERE for Shadow Shot Sunday. Enjoy!!

Step Back in Time......Peille Day

One of the most delightful aspects of living in Nice and the Alpes-Maritimes is that once you have explored all the beauty of the coast, nipped frequently into Italy, and done that glamorous jet-setting thing of breakfasting in France, lunching in Monaco, and dining in Italy, it is time to head for the hills.....

and step back in time as you go Medieval.....

Exploring these villages in the arriere pays (back country) is a sheer delight as you walk the cobbled lanes, follow the twisting alleys, emerge into the atmospheric squares...and just quite happily while away an afternoon.....

Peille is only half an hour from Nice - Take the 116 bus from Vauban Bus Station - Enjoy!!

Weekend Reflections 39 - Nice

Enjoying the new park in Nice on a lovely sunny afternoon, the reflections on the fountain pavement were sharp and clear....

La Coulee Verte in the heart of Nice is a wonderful addition to green spaces in the city.....and appeals to everyone resulting in a very enjoyable afternoon dodging the fountains, strolling from one end of the "corridor" to the other, or sitting on the benches people-watching.....

Shadow Shot Sunday 200 - Nice

Something dramatic for my 200th shadow shot - late afternoon in May looking over the beach in Nice from La Promenade des Anglais.....I started contributing back in 2008 when I was living in Mexico City with this shot taken in the beautiful colonial town of San Miguel de Allende in Mexico....

Both are shadow paintings - painting in light and shadow....For more shadow shots this week, click HERE for Shadow Shot Sunday. Enjoy!

Shadow Shot Sunday 199 - Nice

Where can you find this rather lovely lacy shadow and architectural detail?

At the beautiful Russian Orthodox Church in the centre of Nice  - St Nicholas Cathedral which happens to be the largest Russian Cathedral outside of Russia itself - see the previous post for more shots of this beautiful building. In the meantime check out Shadow Shot Sunday by clicking HERE. Enjoy!

November in Nice - St Nicholas Cathedral

Most towns and cities on the French and Italian Riviera are home to a beautiful Russian Orthodox church harking back to the history of the coastline when Russian royalty and dignitaries would winter on the Riviera to escape the harsh climate of the homeland...

One of the most beautiful examples is the St Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral right in the centre of Nice, and although these stunning blue skies set off the ornate tiled onion domes perfectly, I was particularly enchanted by this muted, golden Autumnal light from the back of the Cathedral....

Isn't it truly magical??

Shadow Shot Sunday 198 - November in Nice!

November in Nice is a time of sharp winter light and clear blue skies...and a bonus today of 22 degrees!! These shots were taken in Nice's newly opened public park in the heart of the city, namely La Promenade de Paillon...

Tracing the course of the original River Paillon running through the centre of Nice, this "Coulee Verte" is a most welcome addition to the amenities of the city providing a wonderful green mile for strolling, meandering, and loitering....

Weekend Reflections 38 - Nice

Sharp winter light and clear blue skies created these reflection shots along Nice's new "green mile" - a newly opened public park which acts as a green corridor or "la Coulee verte" through the city centre linking the Promenade Anglais and the National Theatre. On sunday afternoon children were loving the fun and excitement of running through the fountains and dodging the showers, whilst adults marched more briskly through. Shadow Shot Sunday 197 - Nice

I have just arrived back home today  in Nice after a glorious week exploring Naples and the Amalfi Coast, and these shadows were found in .a little corner of my balcony. The plants seem to have faded and died in my absence, but the shadows are alive and well!! I like them equally in sepia and monochrome - it's good to be home!!

Le Train des Merveilles....Saorge

When it is hot and humid down in Nice, and the town is crowded out by tourists and visitors in the summer months of July and August, time to hop the train up into the mountains and spend the day exploring some of the gorgeous villages in the arriere pays....

Saorge is a picture-perfect perched village with sweeping views across the mountains and valleys, with twisting narrow medieval streets, churches, and cafes. When you have enjoyed wandering, sit down at the cafe at the end of the village which serves tea in a beautiful china tea pot complete with a complimentary slice of home-made cake.....Enjoy!!

Le Train des Merveilles leaves from Nice-Ville railway station taking the scenic route to Cuneo in Italy via Breil Sur Roya and many other lovely little mountain towns and villages. For Saorge, descend at the station Fontan-Saorge, turn right, walk through the mountain tunnel, and in about 20 minutes you will reach the village. The train journey from Nice to Saorge takes just over an hour.

NicePhotoMarathon 2013.....

Twelve photos, twelve themes, twelve hours!! Would you be up for the challenge?? Two hundred of us keen photographers certainly were as we eagerly took part in the 8th annual NicePhotoMarathon held on  Saturday June 8th from 9am – 9pm organized by J.Jerrik and his team from JJ Photo in Old Nice. The rules of the contest were simple – advance 20 Euro subscription, register by 9am on the day, collect your memory card, Tram pass, and T shirt, check back to base at 1pm and 5pm to get your card stamped, and then return by 9pm with your 12 final shots on the memory card sequentially in the order that the themes were released – no cropping, no photoshopping, no alterations of any kind……

Simple right?? Well certainly the organization was simple – smooth and efficient, fun and friendly, but the themes themselves were far from simple, and immediately set up a real testing challenge for the day (especially for an Anglophone like me struggling with the subtle nuances, double-meanings and connotations of the French language!!) Here they are in the order they were announced (1-4 at 9am, 5-8 at 1pm, and 9-12 at 5pm)
1)      Abstraction
2)      Sixties
3)      Pilier de Bar  (Bar Fly)
4)      Degun   (Nobody)
5)      Double Face
6)      Grosse Chaleur  (Big Heat)
7)      Rituel
8)      Decadrage (Outside of the Frame)
9)      Trainee(s)  (Trails or prostitute)
10)   Le monde a l’envers (The World Upside Down)
11)   Recreation
12)   Mon numero de participation (My participation Number)

For those of you who may be struggling a little like me, “pilier du bar” is a barfly (who had to be found at 11am in the morning), “degun”is Nicois slang for “personne” (nobody), decadrage is where the main subject is outside the frame, “grosse chaleur” does have a sexual connotation of being “hot” and “trainee” as well as meaning a trail or track, is also slang for prostitute!! The last theme had me completely stumped as my number of participation was 1832, and the best I could come up with at the end of a long day was a very literal close-up of a velo bleu bike lock! But, I do have to say that the level of challenge did really get the brain working, and enhanced a really fun but tiring day…..

I am sure that there were some really interesting and creative photographs produced on the day, and the best will be displayed at the artspace MUSEEAAV from Thursday June 27th when the winners will also be announced at 6.30pm and awarded with their prizes. So, if you are a budding photographer, and keen to participate in NicePhotoMarathon 2014 why not go and take a look?? Remember, as a participant,  you will certainly get the T shirt!

PS -  Can you work out which of these images goes with which theme??

Shadow Shot Sunday 186 - Promenade des Anglais

Strolling along the Promenade des Anglais on the seafront in Nice is popular with everyone, at any time of the day, but my favourite time is when the sun is setting, and the shadows are stretching out......

stretching out....

and stretching out.....

into their most elongated of forms.........

Shadow Shot Sunday 179 - Nice

Here on the Riviera you can go to the beach any time of year - this is mid-morning before opening for the lunch-time rush in January - when the tables are all set up and inviting, and the shadows are long and waiting - all is poised..........
