Chilli and Lime!! Bidding a Fond Farewell to the Red Palace...

When I first moved to Mexico in the summer of 2005, I was astounded by the amazing strength of colour everywhere in my new surroundings, and loud colour combinations that just wouldn't work anywhere else in the world. Elsewhere they would be lurid, tacky and garish, but here under the strong Mexican sunlight and coupled with the sunny nature of the people and culture, these colours just work wonderfully well....

I was particularly struck by the combination of red and green - chilli and lime, tomato and nopal, pomegranite and courgette, that recurred again and again, not only in the markets, but also in the artesan work, botanical gardens, village plazas, and public spaces...

How could this particular colour combination be resisted??? I mean take a very close look at it....

Thus, when I moved into my own apartment downtown a year later, which was a totally blank canvas of white walls, white ceramic floors, and lots of light...it only seemed natural to transform it into The Red Palace...with chilli and lime everywhere in the artwork, rugs, furnishings, textiles, basketry, ceramics, folk art, vases, plates, dishes......

Here are some of the details in greater close-up....

So it will be with great sadness that I shall have to bid a fond farewell to the Red Palace in July, as I am moving to the French Riviera to take up a new post at The International School of Monaco.....the apartment will be dismantled in 4 months' time and definitely will not "travel" well to another destination..It is uniquely Mexico City!! So here is my record. For other global glimpses of the world this week check out the My World Postings by clicking here. Enjoy!

Hard to leave behind things we've grown accustomed to, the landscapes we create around ourselves... at least you have a few more months to enjoy...

And then a new color scheme to look forward to creating...

Red and green usually denotes a Christmas theme, but not in this spicy rendition! What fun your apartment decor is. I have no doubt you will have a ball decorating new digs in brand new hues; probably more subtle, but thrilling none the less. I know it's hard to leave a place one loves but I must admit I can't feel too terribly sorry for someone who's moving to the south of France...and Monaco, no less! I am green with envy, and flushed red with happiness for you.

Oh it's so pretty! I'm sure you can translate some of this to Monaco, you simply can't give this all up. I know I couldn't.

Not a bad place to go to, the French Riviera :-)
Still, I can see leaving Mexico will be a wrench.
Wonderfully vibrant and interesting post.Really enjoyed it.

Oh, I loved all the color in Mexico, in my apartment, in restaurants -- wherever! You've captured it beautifully and what fun it is to see! You'll find things you love in your new place, too, of course, but it is hard to leave those things that have brought so much pleasure and beauty into our lives! Hope you have a great week, Catherine!

Love the colours of Mexico but you are correct that they will be out of place in Monaco. I hope you will continue posting as I would very much like to see Monaco through your lens.

Oh, Catherine, you did such a beautiful job of decorating your palace. It's wonderful, and I know you'll be sorry to leave it (although you're not exactly going to the north pole). With your eye for colour and your artistic skill, you'll soon have an apartment-sized palace in Monaco.
I hope you're going to continue your blog.

Mexican color look full of life and energy as is seen in your photos of red and green. Your Red Palace is so nice with refined taste. Your cushions are so vibrant and lovely.

I think I know how you feel, but you'll start a new life with rich and sweet memory of life in Mexico.
I wonder what color will dominate in your new room.

Hi Catherine,
I am really happy for you... Monaco will be lovely! I will, however, miss the connection that your blog provided to the Mexico that we loved. My blog will be moving with me to Japan! Let's stay in touch!
Cheers,
Monna

Wow, your talent for composing color and design is pretty amazing. The way you combine the two is original for a photo blog.

Beautiful post. So hard to leave all that but I know when you get to Paris you will transform your space with a Parisien theme. Bon voyage.

I enjoyed seeing your red palace but I can see that it is best left in Mexico. Looking forward to your posts from your next posting too.

You're quite right about these colours not working anywhere else (well, almost anywhere else) and throughout my acquaintance with your blog I've come to appreciate the variety of hues in Mexican culture. Saying that, this is also due to the way you arrange your images.

Great post.

Greetings from London.

Colours perfectly adapted to the the country and its flag! If you want to keep in line with the country, you could of course keep the red for Monaco. Will you live in Monaco or on the French side?

Anyhow will miss your posts from this beuatiful country (a bit upset with France for the moment), but it's not yet! I guess we will still get some nice posts from that side of the Atlantic before you cross it!

Oh, Catherine, I'm sorry you have to leave that gorgeous apartment and Mexico. I'm sure you'll miss it. I do. I lived in Guadalajara for 2 summers with a family about 35 years ago. Monaco will sure be a change of pace!! Yikes! Stopping by for SSS. I'm #63. blessings on your day.

You are right. We think of these and Christmas colors but the vibrancy does have a nice touch as you have displayed it.

Thanks so much for your visit.

Take care and God bless.
