Taking in The Town of Tiles......Puebla!

Puebla, at only two hours east of Mexico City with a great route out via the volcanoes, is one of the most rewarding weekend retreats from the city. With some of the most beautiful architecture in the whole of Mexico, it is indeed the town of tiles.....

Nowhere in Mexico have I seen such beautiful tiled facades such as the Casa del Alfenique above, and a whole host of others. You can also buy the most gorgeous ceramics from plates to vases to tea-sets all under the name of talavera..

Puebla also possesses one of the most lovely zocalos full of shady trees and balloon sellers and flanked on one side by the imposing cathedral boasting fine architectural detail....

In addition, check out the Barrio de Artistas with a row of scenic studios and the antiques market at Plazuela de los Sapas bordered by some of the most colourful streets in the city..

Still having doubts about paying a visit?? Well the bright blue sky below framing the Theatre should be the clincher!!

Buses run to Puebla from TAPO bus station, and recommended hotels would include Hotel Colonial, Royalty Hotel and the Camino Real. Check out other global glimpses from around the world this week by clicking here for My World Tuesday. Enjoy!

Wow! Lovely photos. Thank you for sharing. Did you get a chance to tour any of the talavera factories around town? I highly recommend Uriarte, which is the eighth-oldest business in Mexico (founded in 1824).

Looks like you are having entirely too much fun. Again.

Are you sure you are going to be able to leave ? When's the big move ?

This, again, looks woderful! What is also nice is that you really seem to explore as much as ever possible of this fabulous country (and also some close ones), before leaving! ... and, at least you know that you are not leaving for the worst of places. As Owen, I ask when are you leaving; the end of the semester?

I've heard of Puebla so much. In fact, I think a couple of the Mexicans I know here in London hail from the city. Your photos are amazing. I didn't know that detail about the tiles. They all look fantastic.

Greetings from London.

Many thanks for this:

"Please come and travel here and see for yourself what Mexico is like beyond the beach resorts.....and the drug war stories"

I'm a Mexican living in England and also trying to show everyone that México is SO much more than tired cliches, drug violence and burritos. Un abrazo.

You're so right--the brilliant colours of the building façades as well as the tiles are just stunning against those deep blue skies. I would die of a colour-happiness-overdose if I ventured there I think, and have a nervous breakdown trying to decide on how to pack samples of the wares home with me.
