Shadow Shot Sunday 166 - Antibes

Where can you find this bold shadow writing gracing the ground with its striking alphabet?? On the ramparts of Antibes on a glorious October day with the sun shining and a bright blue cobalt sky..

The white letters against the blue sky and the black letters on the grey ground make a strikingly bold artistic statement...

The sculpture is called "Nomade" and is by Spanish contemporary artist Jaume Plensa from Barcelona. His work is displayed to strong effect in France, Spain and UK and his sculptures in Place Massena, Nice have already featured in this blog...

Looking out to sea from the rampants of Antibes, the sculpture seems irresistable to human interaction with children using it as a climbing frame, and adults enjoying all the angles and perspectives it affords....

Museum of Naive Art - Nice

La Musee d'Art Naif is one of the lesser known art galleries here in Nice, but it is certainly a most delightful place to visit. Set in beautiful gardens behind the Promenade des Anglais towards the airport, it houses the largest collection of Naive Art amassed by Anatole Jakovsky....

Jakovsky, who was of Romanian origin, became the strongest defender and collector of Naive Art, and donated his entire collection to the Nice Museum which was inaugurated in 1982. Over 600 works are stored and displayed here representing European artists from France, Belgium, Spain, Germany and Switzerland, with a whole room devoted to artists from Croatia and Serbia......

Below is a portrait of Anatole Jakovsky himself decked out in full Mariachi Mexican costume astride a proudly prancing horse......

The grounds are studded with charmingly whimsical naive sculptures that make wandering around the gardens a real delight....

The entrance to the Museum is 4 Euros, but free on the first and third sunday of the month, and many buses stop nearby on the Promenade des Anglais. Enjoy!

Hotel Negresco - Nice

The beautiful Hotel Negresco in Nice is celebrating its centenary  with year, with an open exhibition displaying the best the hotel has to offer. Established in 1912 by Romanian Henri Negresco, it is an icon of the Belle Epoque era on the Promenade des Anglais overlooking the sea...

Throughout the hotel, there are some lovely pieces of artwork on display, including these quirky, stylish pieces by Parisian artist Niki de Saint Phalle whose saxophonist sculpture outside the entrance to the hotel is of Miles Davis the jazzman....The quirkiest part of the hotel, however is the cafe La Rotunde whereby you sit beneath chandeliers surrounded by horses escaped from the carousel.....And don't miss the bathrooms where you are ushered in by these rather interesting Cossack figures on the doors.....
