From the moment I first arrived in Marseille on my first trip there, I knew I would love the city. Who couldn't fail to be impressed by this dramatic, sweeping staircase leading down from the main railway station Gare St Charles lined with palm trees, ornamental French streetlamps and Egyptian, Asian and African statuary....
When you arrive at the centre of the city - its beating heart at Vieux Port - there is always something that will surprise you and delight you. Last weekend it was this character on stilts and wheels following, of course, a piano on wheels towards a Dali melting clock. Marseille is a vibrant, dynamic port city oozing charm and friendliness, and it also has that distinct surreal quality which I love - reminding me of another favourite place - Mexico City.....And that colour blue is always astonishing....

I love the way shadows spill, creating a negative to the positive. I really like the reflections photo below too.
Looks like such a beautiful city!! Wonderful shadow shots for the day, Catherine! I can almost feel the sunshine! Have a great weekend!
That is one LONG stairway!
Shadowy Critter
The stairway makes a wonderful zigzag pattern of the lamp pole's shadow. Awesome capture.
Fabuloso! Pretty cool public art that changes each week. Wonder how they 'do that'.
delightful surprises indeed. such a beautiful blue sky.
Intriguing features in delightful Marseilles. The stairway is so sharp and quite steep, but is a wonderful palette for those jagged lamp post shadows. The stairs must look quite romantic lit by night.
The port city is washed in blue from the sky to the sea - and set off by the stone landing full of people. It is a feeling of energy that propels life. The stairs seem to climb up to an invisible mountain that seems impossible to be in this urban oasis...
Wonderful shadows! and yes what an exquisite blue sky!
thanks for your comments this week - much appreciated !
