Cafe La Habana - Mexico City Institutions...

Step back in time and enter Cafe la Habana in Mexico City whereby the clock seems to have stopped in 1952 when this cafe was first opened.....

Sepia prints of Cuba adorn the walls, old-style coffee urns sit on the counters, customers sit at sepia tables beneath whirring ceiling fans, and your bill is rung up at an archaic cash register in the corner....

Back in the early fifties a young man by the name of Fidel Castro sat at one of these tables sowing the seeds of the Cuban Revolution....

Nowadays the cafe is full of a cross section of Mexican Society - old-timers sitting alone in the corner reading a newspaper, young couples on a romantic tryst, well-dressed middle-aged groups lingering over a coffee...

If you want to experience this historical time-warp, then Cafe La Habana is located on the corner of Morelos and Bucarelli, a couple of blocks away from Reforma, on the way to the Centro Historico. If you have any Revolutions to plan then it is open until 1 am every day!! Enjoy! For more MyWorldTuesday postings click here... to see other places around the world this week.

Hi Catherine, looks like a great place to stop in for a while...

Love your new header photo, that lonely coconut waiting for someone to pick it up and see if there's still any juice in it...

Love that beach coconut! I also love nostalgic places like this. Does the cafe serve any Cuban dishes?

So, this is the place where the little bearded bugger plotted to s***w up my country? :-)

Just joking. From you photos, it looks like such a magical place. I would love to come visit it. Yes, like Fly Girl, my question is the same: do they serve Cuban food?

Greetings from London.

yep sorry Cuban - I knew this post would upset you!! if this cafe had not opened who knows the path of history may well have been different!! Fly Girl and Cuban - the food seems mainly Mexican although there are cuban coffees on offer...

Oh wow, the coloring in these photos definitely takes me back to a time since gone by. :) What a great place! I could definitely see a cup of coffee happening here. ;)

Sounds like an interesting place to enjoy a meal and people-watch. I wouldn't be planning the next revolution, but perhaps I'd be watching someone who was!

so glad you all liked this touch of retro-nostalgia time warp this week - unless you are Cuban of course - Fidel really did plot the revolution right here....
