Happy New Year 2010 : Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica

This is the spot where I welcomed 2010 in the infinity pool under a full moon overlooking Arenal Volcano - all in all a pretty special place to celebrate the advent of a new decade. It certainly was special because after this one sighting, the volcano was shrouded in mist, fog, and rain - and we never saw it again!! Instead we had to be content observing all the beautiful birds which alighted on the lodge balcony - the blue gray tanagers, the scarlet-rumped tanagers, the pacific olive tanagers, and the kiskadees ......

There were also orioles, banaquits, crimson-collared tanagers, wrens, and two non-native hyacinth macaws who all came avisiting. Consequently, I became quite the "twitcher" in Costa Rica..

Great way to start a brand new year. The mountain is massive and beautiful at a distance, reminds me of one. Neat shots of the birds, too.

Happy New Year!

I was in a restaurant in Merida. I was fed the worst Arrachera I've ever had in my life....took two bites and spat both out.

I settled instead for toasting the big countdown with a daring tipple of Coca Cola.....10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5....and at that point choked on my own saliva really rather seriously, ruining the big moment for everyone! Sorry you asked? :)

I've been to Volcan Arenal, and some of the hot springs nearby. Absolutely spectacular. I was lucky too...the volcano had been covered in cloud for weeks, but they parted 5 minutes after my arrival and stayed clear for three days until 5 minutes before I left.

I love Arenal! I climbed it when I was in Costa Rica and lounged in the hot springs for hours. What an exciting place to welsom the new year! I celebrated with my family at a neighbors small party. It was fun but no where near as thrilling as your celebration!

Ok, I know suffering from unreasonable amounts of jealousy - of the parrots as much as the gorgeous location. I wouldn've been tempted to try and nap both of them!
