They all came for the light and many ended up here forever - I am of course referring to all the great artists who lived, worked and died here on the French Riviera - Matisse, Renoir, Cocteau, Picasso, Bonnard, Chagall, Cezanne, Leger, Dufy....
I have visited all their galleries....and recently many of their graves, where the intense Mediterranean light continues to enhance their final resting places...

I must be a taphophile too: I visited the small cemetery on top of Cimiez hill last summer. It was brutally hot that day. I walked around the small cemetery several times, looking for Henri Matisse's grave. There was a couple looking for it too. None of us could ever locate it. All that white stone does go well with the brilliant blue sky. I didn't realize so many artists had their final resting place here

I also recently learnt the word taphophile, and guess I must also be one; I have made tens of posts on the Paris cemeteries (especially the Montmartre one) and also the Roquebrune, Menton, Sète ... ones. The ones in the south you have visited are really spectacular!

ooo ... I did not realise quite so many were resting down your way, Catherine.
Judging from some of the other comments, there are no cemetery maps available showing the exact resting place of 'notables', which I find unusual. In Pere LaChaise they sell maps. And at Montmatre they have signs posted at the entrance.
Thanks for this contribution to Taphophile Tragics. From my limited experience, I agree that the 'light' down your way is to treasure. The light we have here in Australia is not at all subtle.
You are now living in a great place to investigate the lives and works of these artists.
I'm must be a tathophile too, but I did not know that name. I'm glad to see that you could visit an other cemetery under a bright blue sky!
