Getting the Blues back in Mexico

London may be home, but it sure is good to return to the Winter light of Mexico. Having just ventured to the Big Smoke for the Christmas break, and for the first time in five years, it felt like moving underground and becoming a member of the mining profession. It was pitch dark by 3.30pm, and some days it simply never got light at all, with a grey, overcast and bleak sky to dampen the spirit....

Contrast the strong desire to hibernate in such a situation, or at the very least feel a little SAD, with the strong clarity and intensity of the light here in Mexico. All these shots were taken in winter months around and about in various locations of the country.....

Now as 2009 rapidly approaches doesn't all that bright blue sky lift the spirits?? Doesn't it banish all feelings of doom and gloom??

Happy New Year Catherine! I remember the nuclear fallout-like sky of the U.K.'s winter well. Not that NYC is much better. Say hello to the sun please.

Happy New Year! London is one of my favorite cities but not in the winter! I can't imagine dealing with the bleakness and I'm in Chicago, which offers precious little sun rays! I'm glad you're soaking up Mexico's sunshine, get some for me!

Happy New Year to youa nd yours, too!

Now, in defense ofmy adopted city I will have to say, or write, rather, that after spending 26 years in the sun (that's Cuba) I welcomed a change of scenery very much. London, and the UK by default offers one the possibility to see nature dying and being born again. Autumn is a proper affair with various shades of orange, yellow and auburn colouring the ground, winter is not white anymore (I wish there was real snow for once!) but it's still cold enough to thank heaven and the stars for a hot cuppa (tea or coffee, take your pick) and spring, what can I say, spring is an explosion, a visual orgasm of magnificent hues hither and thither. Literally overnigh dandelions and carnations pop up baring their most festives colours unashamedly.

I understand what you write about SAD (I know a couple of sufferers) but once you are aware that you cannot change nature and there's no point in going against, you end up enjoying the cold weather as such.

Impressive photos and that blue sky is so beautiful.

Thanks. Happy New Year to you and yours!

Greetings from (your) London :-).

Happy New Year Cuban in London... I totally agree with you... I am a Londoner through and through and miss many things.. including the seasons, national trust properties, river walks and parks, live theatre, all the art/culture events etc etc... my postings are just a trifle tongue in cheek putting a positive spin on my temporary adopted home.. but spotting all the differences and changes are part of the fun of swapping countries and cultures..happy 2009
