Quirky Mexico City....

A couple of weeks ago when I walked down the forgotten end of Calle Rio Lerma, this ordinary residential apartment building was an ordinary dull beige in a very ordinary street. Just look at it now!!

Do you think there was a residents' meeting whereby it was mooted and agreed to paint the entire building in these wacky zig-zag camouflague colours?? A desire for the faded and forgotten to be much more funky??

That's what I absolutely love about living in Mexico City - its quirky and dynamic energy that means everytime you think you have the measure of the place something subtly (or not so subtly!) shifts, and it eludes you yet again! There is always something to be surprised by or something to smile about in this surrealist city of magic realism.

Other favourite sightings in the city include one taxi towing another using a human tow rope, a pair of chihuahuas dressed as Sherlock Holmes and a Fifties Starlet, plus a desperate truck driver letting his tyres down to squeeze through an underheight bridge.... What have you seen to make you smile this week?? Check out more sightings around the world with My World Tuesday postings....

At first glance I thought this was a photo of a mirored glas covered building. I am truly astounded! Thanks for the fun photo! I love Mexico City! Great blog!

When I first looked at your photos I thought I'd finally lost my eyesight and was bound for Specsavers. It's great to live in such a dynamic city.

I'm trying to remember the name of the play with Spacey in it. It wasn't 'The Iceman Cometh', it was one where the action took place in Ireland.

Many thanks.

Greetings from London.

Relly nice ... and improved by your photos with the electric or phone wires! A good way to make a dull building look really nice!

That is so much fun! They really accomplished that illusion with just paint? I wish it would catch on in North America. No more dull-looking cement buildings. ¡Imaginación de largo viva! (I looked up "Long live imagination!" online)

Great photos - well spotted on the building! Looks far more interesting than your average office block. Followed you over from A Girl in Asia - love your photos!

The imagination and creativity you find in Mexico is mind boggling. Blooming apple blossoms scattered on trees made me smile this week.

I'd love to see what the apartments look like on the inside. Actually I'd really like to see the human tow rope. The building looks like it's wearing geometric camouflage.

I am trying to understand that building. Is the architecture very odd, as well as the painting or is that an optical illusion b/c of the painting?

hi Maryam - the building is perfectly ordinary and flat with no odd angles at all - it is all an optical illusion created by paint!! Thanks for the visit...
