..and what a treat is in store for you...the beautiful beaches and deserted dunes of Fire Island...
You can walk along the surf for miles and take in all the different communities from Cherry Grove to Sunken Forest to Point o' Woods ( the only permanent community and by application only!) to Ocean Bay Park and further still....
In fact this thin New York Island stretches 32 miles along Long Island's south shore and is also a haven for birds and wild deer; indeed a perfect antidote to the frenzied frantic pace of the city...
When the afternoon shadows get this long on the sandy beach, you know the last ferry is just about to depart, and it is time to bid farewell and head back. You can get day package returns for the train, taxi and ferry from the Long Island Railroad at Penn Street Station at a very reasonable price. In the meantime check out more shadow photography over at Tracy's meme Shadow Shot Sunday by clicking here...Enjoy!!

For a minute there I thought we were walking together along the boardwalk and down the stairs to "my" beach here in southern New Brunswick! I had no idea Fire Island is such a beautiful expanse of beach. Have only ever heard of nefarious goings on by dodgy people hanging out there (one whom I knew personally). Looks pretty pristine to me!
The beaches on the South Shore are beautiful, resplendent in the soft white sand. The island is more special as the hoards of travelers are spending teh day at Jones Beach. What a wonderful day trip!
Gorgeous beach! And such beautiful skies! And those add up to make for terrific shadow shots for the day. Really superb captures, Catherine! Enjoy your weekend!

Haven't been to Fire Island in 30+ years, but I remember some very fun days at the beach there. I especially like those first two shots--the perspective in the first, and the broken-shadow pattern on the steps.
I miss beaches like that, really beautiful.
Great shots...
Happy Sunday!
Fun!! Never been to Fire Island...we'll have to check it out next time we're on the east coast! Absolutely love the shadows in the second pic...going down the stairs - cool!!
Sigh...soon the cold winter winds will chase all the happy summer thoughts and days away, while we lament for it's return in the spring and the smell of warm salty air soothes our souls!ca
What a lovely spot! The beaches are gorgeous!
Great shadows for the week as well!
Love the shadows on the sand, Lovely!
Wonderful! These are great!
I love these long shadows
Louciao - sorry to report that i witnessed nothing remotely dodgy or nefarious - but who knows what goes on behind closed doors there!! (well actually now I think about it there were some scary naked people around Cherry grove!!) but I just loved the wide expanse of open beach and walking for miles...
Hi everyone - I love reading your comments every week - much appreciated...
I've heard so much about Fire Island, but never thought to Google it for images! It is beautiful! It looks devoid of humans in your shots. It would seem like it would always have lots of people there escaping from the city.
Love these shadows, Catherine! Your photos are great, and I really like the Mexican shots that follow. I can't believe I haven't made it down there yet to see the Mayan ruins. Mexico is definitely on my list of places to see.
Thanks so much for stopping by my place!
Lynette
